Elder Care Services

Type in elder care services on Google and nearly 10,000 choices pop up. Choices are great, but how in the world does the average consumer find the appropriate service and on top of that - make a responsible decision on which of these services are indeed safe reliable companies.

The elder care industry has the challenge of reaching this growing number of Internet users. You could spend a small fortune bidding on key words or paying for top placement on a page.

How can you promote yourself to the senior (and this adult child in search of your service) without going broke? Is it possible to get the elder care business community to work together to enhance the service choices for the senior, but also work together to promote one another? Working together and avoiding wasteful duplication of resources is an amazing concept. Sounds like a dream doesnt it?

Well, this dream is now a reality thanks to the ingenious simple idea of Barbara Mascio, founder of Senior Approved Services. ‘Only those businesses with a 90% or higher satisfaction rating, as reported by the seniors (and/or family member of the senior) who have used the service, are permitted in our exclusive directory,’ states Ms. Mascio.

So, a person searching for a safe reliable service for a loved one has a quick, safe and simple method to select a service. How does this benefit the elder care businesses Certified as Senior Approved? Each Certified Senior Approved Service naturally promotes itself as a Senior Approved Service. Naturally this lends credibility to this business and increases its client base. This in turns promotes the core business, that being Senior Approved Service, which then promotes all the other services in this exclusive network.

Circular marketing in combination of making good use of collaborative partners is how Ms. Mascio is able to provide such a variety of useful resources for the senior and family caregiver. There is so much wasted time, money and resources in the elder care industry through duplication. Competition is great, but if you come across a service that has a proven value, why not just work together and help promote one another?

Senior Approved Services does just that. Not only are there benefits in being part of this exclusive network (from a business standpoint) - you are part of a very exclusive network - you cannot pay for a listing - but through the careful partnering of other elder care services - each of these Certified Senior Approved Services are marketed on a national level by complimentary services.

Seniors Changes in Medicaid Law

Anyone with more than $500,000 in home equity cannot receive long term care benefits from Medicaid. Additionally, one will be penalized if they have given any type of gift within the last five years (the look-back period was previously three years). The gifts taken into account include college tuition for grandchildren, emergency help for family, Christmas, birthday, wedding and graduation presents, charitable and church donations. In other words, Congress is attempting to insure that the only people who use Medicaid for long term care will be those that normally dont have enough money to give gifts anyway. Use caution making gifts or donations as they will penalize your ability to obtain Medicaid benefits for long term care for the next 5 years. This senior insurance program will no longer be available to many.

The new law starts the penalty period when the senior applies for Medicaid, not when the gift is given. For example, if Mrs. Jones gave a $40,000 donation four years ago (within the five year look-back period) and if Medicaid needs to pay a local long term care facility $4,000 a month, then Medicaid will not make any payments for 10 months. In other words, Medicaid penalizes assistance for the value of the gift. Even if Mrs. Jones is now broke, Medicaid will not provide support until she has been in a long term care facility for 10 months.

Also be aware that nearly every state is tightening their implementation of the general Medicaid rules. Do not automatically assume that an annuity is an exempt asset or that the residence cannot be attach ed for recovery. These rules are in flux and favor the state, so you must maintain contact with your state agency that administers Medicaid or an Elder Law attorney.

So what should the average senior do? Middle income and wealthy seniors no longer have a substitute for long term care insurance. They cannot rely on the government as their supplier of senior insurance. Of the three choices that have been available for dealing with long term care: a) self-insurance, b) private long term care insurance, c) position assets to collect Medicaid, the list is now down to two options: a) self-insure or b) private long term care insurance. In other words, if youve delay ed buying long term care insurance thinking that you had the government as a safety net, that safety net is now gone.

Note that Medicaid was never a good option anyway. Someone with private long term care insurance that can pay ‘full fare’ for long term care gets a nice sunny private room with big windows. The senior on Medicaid gets shoved in an interior room with two other people, no windows. As much as this is illegal or people want to deny it happens, as stat ed by the National Senior Citizens Law Center: ‘Many common nursing home practices are illegal. For example, although the Federal Nursing Home Reform Law requires that all residents receive high-quality care, many nursing homes provide lesser care to residents whose care is paid through Medicaid.’

Why dont seniors just get private long term care insurance? The most common reason is the expense. But its a bad excuse because an experienced financial advisor can show you how to keep the cost down or make a one time payment rather than annual payments (using an immediate annuity or a ‘combo policy,’ its possible to make one single deposit and avoid annual payments). In some states, insurance companies can provide a return-of-premium option. With that option, if you never use the policy, your heirs get all of your premiums return ed. But dont delay. One negative comment in your medical records can preclude you from ever getting insured so get the coverage now.

Spouse Depressed?

Many people are not sure if they are just not feeling well or slipping into a depressed

state. Several places are available online where you can run through a simple

depression test. These are usually simple question and answer. Do a search in Google

and find a depression test now.

About 5 percent of adults suffer from depression at any given point in time. If your spouse is under stress, experiencing a major loss or has an anxiety problem it places him or her at a higher risk.

Depression also can run in families, so assess the history of psychiatric problems in your partners family. It is important to be aware of signs of depression because it can not only affect your relationship with each other, but also the well-being of your kids.

If one or more of these signs of depression persist in your spouse, discuss the need to seek help with him or her:

Frequent sadness, tearfulness or crying,

Feelings of futility or hopelessness,

A decreased interest in activities; or inability to enjoy previously favorite activities,

Persistent feelings of boredom or low energy,

Withdrawal or poor communication with others,

Feelings of low self esteem or inappropriate guilt,

An over-sensitivity to rejection or failure,

Increased irritability, anger, or hostility,

An increased frequency of relationship conflicts,

Frequent complaints of stress-induced illnesses, such as headaches or stomachaches,

Frequent absences from work or poor performance there,

Impaired memory or concentration,

A major change in eating and/or sleeping patterns,

Unusual talk of divorce or the futility of life,

Thoughts or expressions of suicide or any other self destructive behaviors.

A spouse who used to enjoy doing things with you may now spend most of her free time alone or isolating. Things that were once interesting and enjoyable now bring little joy to a depressed husband or wife.

Men and women who are depressed sometimes say they wish they were dead or may talk about suicide. Consequently, they can be considered at increased risk. They may also abuse alcohol or other mind-altering substances as a way to feel better.

Spouses who frequently cause trouble or create dissension at home may actually be depressed, but not know it. Because your partner may not always seem sad in a typical sense, you may not realize that his or her troublesome behavior is actually a sign of depression.

However, when asked in a kindly and sensitive way, your partner may sometimes state that he or she does actually feel unhappy or sad. Early diagnosis and psychological counseling are essential.

Depression is a real problem that requires professional help. Comprehensive treatment often includes both individual and family therapy. It may also include the use of antidepressant medication. For help, contact a clinical psychologist. He or she will diagnose and treat your spouses depression and, in some cases, even include you in the treatment process.

Major Depression Treatment

Several places are available online where you can run through a simple depression test. These are usually simple question and answer. Do a search in Google and find a depression test now.

Why Paxil CR is prescribed and how does it work

Paxil CR is used to help relieve a variety of emotional problems that interfere with your ability to function, especially major depression. Changes in appetite, sleep patterns, loss of interest in people and activities they enjoy, feelings of worthlessness and suicidal thoughts are all things that this medication helps manage. It is also good for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorders, general anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. It has also been prescribed to women to help with premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Paxil CR is part of a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These inhibitors slow the process of serotonin being absorbed between the nerves, boosting how much is available in the brain. By slowing down this process, your moods become more stable and more pleasant. You will begin to see improvements within one to four weeks of taking Paxil CR and by continuing it thereafter.

Taking Paxil CR and its side effects

Take your Paxil CR once a day in the morning. It can be taken with or without food and if you are taking any other medications make sure you let your doctor know and make sure they are safe to take. Swallow it whole or if taken a liquid version, shake the oral suspension well before using. If you miss a dose of your medication, skip it and take the next dose at your regularly scheduled time.

Because everyone reacts differently to medication, side effects can only be anticipated. If they get severe, check with your doctor because the first four to six weeks some side effects can be more annoying than others. Some of the mores common side effects of taking Paxil CR include, but are not limited to: constipation, decreased appetite, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, gas, nausea, sleeplessness, sweating, tremors, and vertigo.

Paxil CR, other medications and conditions

Treating your major depression with Paxil CR is appropriate if you are not taking drugs that are classified as MAO inhibitors. There have been reports of fatal reactions when these two types of medication are combined within two weeks of starting or stopping the inhibitor. Also, if you break out or have an allergic reaction to Paxil CR, consult your doctor immediately.

If you are taking Paxil CR to manage your major depression and you discover your symptoms getting worse or you are suddenly having suicidal thoughts, contact your doctor straight away. Some antidepressants have been associated with this phenomenon. Also, stay away from this medication if you have glaucoma, seizures, manic disorders, metabolism or blood disorders.
